About Company

United Airlines is looking for an Associate Data Scientist to join its Analytics and Innovation (Ai) team in Gurugram. This isn’t a typical “predictive modeling” data science role; it is deeply rooted in Operations Research (OR). You will be part of a team that tackles massive, cross-functional problems—from airport operations and crew scheduling to revenue management—using mathematical optimization to drive millions in enterprise value.

Job Description

The Associate Data Scientist in the Ai team is essentially an “Optimization Engineer.” In the airline industry, every minute of delay and every pound of fuel matters. You will be the person writing the algorithms that decide how planes are routed or how staff are scheduled to minimize costs and maximize customer satisfaction. You are the “brain” behind the automation of United’s global logistics.

Requirements

  • Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, CS, Statistics, Operations Research, Applied Math, or Economics.
  • Experience: 0 – 2 years (Entry-level/Early Career).
  • OR Fundamentals: Strong grasp of $LP$, $MILP$, Markov Decision Processes ($MDP$), and metaheuristics (Genetic Algorithms, Ant Colony Optimization).
  • Status: Must be legally authorized to work in India (Local terms).
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Mastery of solvers like Gurobi or CPLEX.
  • Experience in designing efficient heuristics in Python, R, Java, or C++.
  • Theoretical and practical expertise in AI/ML modeling.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Solve Complex Puzzles: Partner with business leaders in Airport Operations, Network Planning, and Digital Products to identify opportunities where optimization can automate and improve processes.
  • Develop OR Solutions: Build and deploy high-quality mathematical models using techniques like Linear Programming (LP), Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP), and Metaheuristics.
  • Collaborative Coding: Work within the Digital Technology ecosystem to ensure your code is reusable, well-documented, and seamlessly integrated into United’s massive tech stack.
  • Communicate Insights: Structure complex technical results into professional presentations for stakeholders and leadership, ensuring “technical escalations” are handled promptly.

Role Summary

The Associate Data Scientist in the Ai team is essentially an “Optimization Engineer.” In the airline industry, every minute of delay and every pound of fuel matters. You will be the person writing the algorithms that decide how planes are routed or how staff are scheduled to minimize costs and maximize customer satisfaction. You are the “brain” behind the automation of United’s global logistics.

Company Culture & Insights

The Gurugram office is part of United Airlines Business Services Pvt. Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary that acts as a Global Capability Center (GCC). The culture is high-stakes but collaborative. Aviation is a 24/7 business, so “reliable, punctual attendance” is highlighted because the systems you build keep planes in the air. You’ll be working in a “cross-functional” environment, meaning you won’t just be sitting behind a desk; you’ll be learning the intricacies of how a global airline actually operates.

Why We Recommend This Job

  • Classic OR Playground: Airlines are the “Holy Grail” for Operations Research. If you love math and optimization, there is no better industry to see your formulas translate into real-world action.
  • Elite Tech Stack: Exposure to Gurobi and CPLEX is a major career win. These are expensive, high-end solvers that are standard in top-tier logistics and finance firms.
  • Global Impact: Even though you are based in Gurugram, your code will affect flights and passengers across United’s extensive global route network.

Career Growth Potential

United has a structured path for technical talent:

Management Track: Moving into roles like Manager of Analytics & Innovation.

Associate Data Scientist: Learning the domain and building sub-modules.

Data Scientist / Senior Data Scientist: Taking ownership of entire business workstreams (e.g., “Crew Optimization”).

Principal Data Scientist / Lead: Defining the long-term AI/OR strategy for the airline.

Skills You’ll Gain

  • Solver Proficiency: Hands-on mastery of Gurobi/CPLEX.
  • Aviation Domain Expertise: Deep understanding of Revenue Management and Network Planning.
  • Production-Grade Data Science: Learning to write code that isn’t just a “research project” but an automated system running 24/7.
  • Stakeholder Management: The ability to explain a $MILP$ formulation to a non-technical Airport Manager.

Salary & Benefits Info

  • Estimated Salary: For an entry-level Associate role (0-2 years) in a top-tier GCC like United, the Total Compensation (TC) typically ranges from ₹12,00,000 to ₹18,00,000 per annum.
  • Benefits: * Travel Privileges: Access to United’s extensive route network.
  • Wellness: Top-tier health and wellness benefits.
  • Networking: Building lasting connections within a global digital technology team.
