Job Description
We are seeking a proactive Junior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of high-precision instrumentation for Electron Microscopy Technologies (EMT). In this role, you will conduct feasibility studies, test new designs, and evaluate existing mechanical systems to enhance performance and cost-effectiveness. You will oversee the entire lifecycle of detailed design, from conceptual 3D modeling to prototype testing and production release.
Requirements
- Education & Experience: Background in mechanical design for instruments or semiconductor equipment.
- Technical Proficiency: Extensive experience with 3D CAD (Autodesk Inventor is a major plus), FEA, and PLM software.
- Standards: In-depth knowledge of ANSI/ASME Y14.5M, GD&T, and surface finish requirements.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Deep understanding of sheet metal fabrication and design for manufacturability/serviceability (DFM/DFS).
- System Integration: Experience in high-level system integration and functional prototyping.
- Desirable Skills
- Proficiency in ANSYS Workbench FEA and Agile PLM.
- Experience with HALT/HASS testing, high voltage design, or magnetic and X-ray radiation shielding.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Advanced Design: Create complex mechanical designs for TEM and SEM (Transmission/Scanning Electron Microscopy) applications.
- Global Collaboration: Participate in design reviews and meetings aligned with the Pacific Coast (PST) time zone.
- Product Lifecycle: Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) to optimize existing products.
- CAD & Drafting: Develop 3D solid models and 2D assembly drawings (conceptual to production release), specifically focusing on sheet metal and machined parts.
- Prototyping: Assemble and test prototypes/pre-production units to ensure design performance.
- Thermal Management: Design and analyze cooling methods, including water circuits and TEC (Thermoelectric Cooler) designs.
- Tooling: Design the necessary tooling and fixtures for manufacturing and assembly.
How to Apply?
Role Summary
The Junior Mechanical Design Engineer at Gatan is a “Precision Systems” role. Unlike general mechanical engineering, this position focuses on Electron Microscopy, which requires designing at the micron and nanometer level. You aren’t just designing “parts”; you are designing environments that must manage vacuum seals, X-ray shielding, and extreme thermal stability. Because Gatan is an industry leader, your designs will enable scientists to see the smallest building blocks of matter.
Company Culture & Insights
Gatan (under AMETEK) operates with the rigor of a scientific laboratory. The culture is highly disciplined, process-oriented, and focused on Ethics and Integrity. A unique aspect of this role is the PST Time Zone alignment, meaning you will likely work a “late-shift” in Bangalore to collaborate with US-based teams. This requires a high degree of autonomy and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively across cultures.
Why We Recommend This Job
- Niche Tech Mastery: Semiconductor and microscopy equipment design is one of the most stable and high-paying niches in mechanical engineering.
- Thermal & Vacuum Expertise: Gaining experience in water circuits and TEC cooling in a vacuum environment is a highly specialized skill set that is in demand at companies like ASML, Intel, and Applied Materials.
- Global Exposure: Direct interaction with US teams on NPI projects provides a fast track to understanding global engineering standards.
Career Growth Potential
Starting as a Junior Engineer at Gatan, the natural path is toward Senior Design Engineer or Systems Architect. Because AMETEK is a massive global conglomerate, there are also significant opportunities for internal mobility into different business units (Aerospace, Medical, or Power) or moving into Technical Program Management.
Skills You’ll Gain
- Micro-Precision Design: Learning to design components where thermal expansion of even a few microns can ruin an experiment.
- Radiation & Magnetic Shielding: Understanding the physics of X-ray and magnetic interference in high-voltage environments.
- VAVE (Value Engineering): Mastering the art of making high-performance products more cost-effective without sacrificing quality.
Salary & Benefits Info
- Estimated Salary: For a Junior Engineer with 2–4 years of specialized experience, the market range in Bangalore’s “Deep Tech” sector is approximately ₹10,00,000 – ₹18,00,000 per annum.
- Benefits: AMETEK offers a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive medical insurance, retirement contributions (PF/Gratuity), and professional development support. The PST-aligned shift may also include specific “Shift Allowances.”
