Job Description

The Software Engineer I is an entry-level professional engineering position embedded within the Global Enterprise Technology division. The primary focus of this role is System Integration and Workflow Automation.

Instead of building isolated, standalone apps, you will design, develop, test, and support software solutions that act as the “connective tissue” of Columbia’s global business. You will write code and design automated workflows that bridge applications, third-party services, and cloud data repositories under the direct supervision and technical mentorship of senior engineers.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or equivalent applicable technical certifications.
  • Experience: Typically 1 to 2 years of professional experience, structured engineering internships, or significant academic project work in software development or automation engineering.
  • Core Programming & Scripting: Foundational, hands-on experience with one or more languages, specifically:
  • Python: For data manipulation and custom integration scripts.
  • SQL: For querying and managing relational databases.
  • PowerShell: For system configuration and environment automation.
  • Workflow Automation: Direct exposure or introductory knowledge of Microsoft Power Automate, Azure Logic Apps, or similar industry workflow platforms.
  • AI-Assisted Tools: Familiarity with Microsoft Copilot or equivalent generative-AI coding tools, with a demonstrated interest in using AI safely to improve code velocity.
  • Networking & Architecture: A baseline conceptual understanding of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), RESTful endpoints, JSON data formats, and relational database management systems (RDBMS).
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Introductory exposure to public cloud platforms, with a strong preference for Microsoft Azure.
  • Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal communication skills, an analytical mind with clear attention to detail, and a proactive willingness to learn new tools in an Agile environment.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Workflow Construction: Build, deploy, and maintain cloud-based automated workflows using Microsoft Power Automate, standard Azure Logic Apps, and custom Python or PowerShell helper scripts.
  • API Integration: Assist in connecting distributed enterprise systems using cloud APIs, webhooks, and event-driven or message-based messaging architectures.
  • AI-Driven Coding: Integrate Microsoft Copilot into your daily engineering workflow to generate initial code drafts, perform basic code reviews, formulate unit tests, and draft architectural documentation.
  • Agile Team Delivery: Active ownership of assigned user stories within the team’s sprint backlog. You will ensure your deliveries meet strict, pre-defined acceptance criteria.
  • Operational Support: Help debug software defects, fix integration pipeline bottlenecks, and resolve sudden automation failures with technical guidance from senior engineering peers.
  • System Documentation: Regularly contribute to the team’s internal knowledge base, technical runbooks, and automated system playbooks to ensure high maintainability.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure all configuration and custom code strictly adhere to Columbia Sportswear’s global performance, data privacy, and cybersecurity standards.

Role Summary

At its core, this position is designed to accelerate your growth into a full-scale Integration Engineer. In a modern retail enterprise, data must flow continuously between e-commerce engines, inventory databases, supply chain systems, and logistics partners.

As a Software Engineer I, you are the creator of these data pathways. You will leverage low-code/no-code platforms alongside traditional scripting tools to replace manual overhead with high-performance, automated software systems.

Additionally, this role embraces AI-assisted development, expecting engineers to actively use tools like Microsoft Copilot to write cleaner code, generate technical documentation, and speed up testing.

Company Culture & Insights

Life at Columbia Sportswear is anchored in the spirit of adventure, continuous learning, and shared accountability. As an engineer in Bangalore, you will work within an Agile Scrum framework, participating in daily stand-ups, sprint planning sessions, and retrospective reviews.

The engineering culture is highly collaborative and low on ego; senior engineers actively dedicate time to review your code, explain system-level integration patterns, and guide you toward technical independence. Columbia values transparency and proactive curiosity, providing a safe sandbox for junior talent to experiment with modern automation stacks safely.

Why We Recommend This Job

  • The Power Platform Niche: Specializing in Azure Logic Apps and Power Automate makes your profile highly competitive. Enterprises globally are investing millions into cloud automation, making this a lucrative, high-growth engineering niche.
  • AI Native Workflow: While many traditional firms restrict generative AI, Columbia actively encourages you to master Microsoft Copilot. This ensures you build high-velocity development habits that are crucial for the software engineering landscape of 2026.
  • Global Enterprise Scale: Working for a multi-billion dollar retailer exposes you to data processing challenges at massive scale, providing a highly prestigious brand stamp on your resume.

Career Growth Potential

  • During your first 18 months, your impact remains bounded within a single team focusing on individual integrations and automated scripts. As you demonstrate technical independence and master Azure system architectures, your scope of influence expands to designing cross-functional data flows, leading large-scale system cutovers, and mentoring incoming engineering associates.
