Job Description

As a Design Engineer (Mechanical) in the Research & Development functional area, you will be responsible for the mechanical design and maintenance of heavy mining machinery. This role involves taking technical inputs and transforming them into high-quality engineering solutions. You will navigate the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and engineering calculations to 3D modeling and engineering release (CN/BOM) processes. This is a hybrid role based in Bengaluru, requiring a blend of independent technical execution and international collaboration.

Requirements

  • Education: BE/BTech in Mechanical Engineering from a reputed institute with a minimum of 70% or 7.5 CGPA.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in Mechanical Design.
  • Domain Knowledge: * Strong fundamentals in Strength of Materials and Machine Design.
  • Proficiency in Structural Design (welded structures and bolted joints).
  • Mastery of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and Tolerance Analysis.
  • Basic understanding of Hydraulics and Electrical systems.
  • Software Tools: * Hands-on experience in Creo (3D modeling and 2D drafting).
  • Experience with Windchill and Teamcenter (PLM) for BOM changes and Change Notices (CN).
  • Industry Preference: Experience in an OEM, Heavy Engineering, or Mining machinery domain is highly preferred.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Concept & Design: Generate innovative design concepts, perform engineering calculations/validations, and select appropriate components from suppliers.
  • CAD/PLM Execution: Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings in Creo/Windchill. Manage BOM (Bill of Materials) changes and release processes using Teamcenter.
  • Product Maintenance: Support New Product Development (NPD) and engineering release processes, ensuring all designs meet quality and efficiency standards.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Maintain timely communication with customers and global stakeholders to address technical questions and troubleshoot problems.
  • Continuous Improvement: Propose creative ideas to improve existing equipment and share knowledge within the team to foster synergy.
  • Compliance: Follow all company policies, values, and the business code of practice while reporting progress to the Team Lead/Manager.

Role Summary

The Design Engineer at Epiroc is a “Systems Integrator for Heavy Metal.” Unlike consumer electronics, mining equipment must withstand massive vibrational loads, corrosive dust, and extreme temperatures. You aren’t just designing parts; you are designing for durability and safety in a field where failure can lead to significant operational downtime.

Company Culture & Insights

Epiroc values “New Thinkers.” Their culture is characterized by an international work environment where authenticity and unique perspectives drive innovation. The company is deeply committed to the Energy Transition, meaning you will likely work on projects related to the electrification of mining fleets (moving away from diesel).

Why We Recommend This Job

  • Sustainable Impact: You will contribute directly to the “Green Mining” shift, a high-priority global initiative.
  • Advanced Tool Stack: Mastery of the Creo + Teamcenter stack in a heavy engineering context is a premium skill set that is highly transferable to other OEMs (like Caterpillar, Komatsu, or Volvo).
  • Hybrid Flexibility: The ability to work in a hybrid model in Bengaluru provides a modern balance for R&D professionals.

Career Growth Potential

  • Senior Design Engineer: Taking full ownership of a product subsystem (e.g., the chassis or the drilling arm).
  • Lead Engineer / R&D Manager: Overseeing the technical roadmap for a specific machine category.
  • Specialist – Structural/Hydraulics: Becoming a global Subject Matter Expert (SME) within Epiroc for specific engineering disciplines.

Skills You’ll Gain

Skill CategorySpecific Competencies

Soft SkillsInternational Collaboration, Stakeholder Management, Strategic Planning.

Salary & Benefits Info

  • Estimated Salary: For a Mechanical Design Engineer with 3 years of experience in the heavy engineering sector in Bengaluru, the Total Compensation (TC) typically ranges from ₹9,00,000 to ₹14,00,000 per annum, depending on the candidate’s proficiency in Creo/Teamcenter and prior OEM experience.
  • Benefits: Hybrid work model, global exposure, robust health insurance, and continuous competency development programs.

Frequently Asked Interview Questions

  1. GD&T: “Explain the difference between Position and Concentricity in GD&T. In what scenario would you choose one over the other for a rotating shaft in a mining rig?”
  2. Structural Design: “How do you determine the appropriate bolt grade and torque requirements for a joint subject to high-frequency vibration?”
  3. Manufacturing: “Given the harsh environment of a mine, what material selection criteria would you prioritize for a welded structure to prevent fatigue failure?”
  4. Tooling: “Walk me through your process for performing a complex Change Notice (CN) in Teamcenter. How do you ensure the BOM remains consistent across versions?”

Behavioral & Culture Questions

  1. Innovation: “Epiroc values new thinkers. Tell me about a time you proposed a creative solution to a mechanical problem that went against the ‘standard’ way of doing things.”
  2. Teamwork: “How do you handle a situation where a customer or stakeholder from a different country has technical requirements that conflict with your current design constraints?”
  3. Self-Starter: “Describe a time you had to learn a new technology or engineering competency (e.g., hydraulics) on your own to complete a project.”
