Frequently Asked Interview Questions (With Answers & Solution Guidelines)

  1. Explaining the Incident Management Lifecycle
    • Question:“What are the key stages of an Incident Management lifecycle under the ITIL framework?”
    • Answer & Solution Context: Detail the sequential stages: Identification (alert triggered/user logs ticket), Logging (record details), Categorization & Prioritization (based on Impact and Urgency), Initial Diagnosis/Triage (L1 analysis), Investigation & Escalation (if beyond L1 SOP), Resolution & Recovery (applying fix), and Closure (verifying with user/monitoring tools).
  2. Linux Troubleshooting for High CPU Utilization
    • Question:“How do you investigate high CPU or memory utilization on a production Linux server?”
    • Answer & Solution Context: Use command-line utilities: Run top or htop to identify the specific process ID (PID) consuming maximum CPU/RAM. Use ps -aux | grep [PID] to inspect process details, check disk space using df -h, view system logs using tail -f /var/log/syslog or journalctl, and follow the designated SOP before killing or restarting a process.
  3. Handling P1 / Critical Outages
    • Question:“What is your immediate response when a Priority 1 (P1) production system alert is triggered?”
    • Answer & Solution Context: Emphasize speed and communication: First, acknowledge the alert and initiate the emergency P1 bridge call. Notify key stakeholders via designated template alerts. Join the bridge alongside L2/L3 leads, document technical updates in real-time within the ticket, and coordinate until service is fully restored.

Behavioral & Culture Questions (With Guidance & Model Answers)

  1. Working in Rotational & Night Shifts
    • Question:“This position involves 24/7 rotational shifts including night schedules. How do you manage shift changes?”
    • Guidance & Answer Strategy: Express adaptability and personal discipline. Highlight understanding the importance of 24/7 client support continuity, maintaining healthy rest schedules, and committing to operational reliability.
  2. Managing Stress During High-Volume Outages
    • Question:“How do you stay calm and accurate when multiple critical alert tickets breach simultaneously?”
    • Guidance & Answer Strategy: Use the STAR method. Explain prioritizing tickets strictly based on business impact and urgency matrix, maintaining steady focus, applying established SOPs accurately, and escalating overload to team leads when necessary.
