Job Description
As a Design Engineer within the REPS team, you will be part of a high-impact group responsible for the electromechanical design and development of diesel and gas generator systems. This role is unique because it bridges the gap between mechanical engineering (exhaust, air intake, and fuel systems) and electrical engineering (control panels and breaker panels). You will take concepts from the drawing board to production, ensuring Caterpillar’s power solutions are resilient, efficient, and market-ready.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Automobile Engineering.
- Technical Experience: * Hands-on experience with the design and development of electromechanical components.
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (Creo).
- Familiarity with PLM software (Teamcenter) for data management.
- Functional Skills: * Ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams (SMEs, Project Leads, Suppliers).
- Understanding of DFA (Design for Assembly) and DFM (Design for Manufacturing).
- Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Work Arrangement: This role requires working onsite five days a week at the Bangalore office..
Roles and Responsibilities
- System Design: Develop and refine sub-systems for generators, including fuel systems, air intakes, and complex exhaust lines.
- Panel Engineering: Concept and design control panels and circuit breaker panels, ensuring electrical components are correctly selected and integrated.
- CAD Modeling: Create high-fidelity 3D models and detailed engineering drawings for assemblies and individual components using Creo.
- Engineering Analysis: Perform critical design calculations and structural analysis to ensure components can withstand operational stresses.
- Manufacturing Integration: Apply DFM/DFA principles to ensure designs are optimized for production and easy to assemble on the factory floor.
- Technical Support: Act as a liaison for Quality and Purchasing teams during the part development and supplier selection phases.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with senior engineers and stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time and meet Caterpillar’s global quality standards.
How to Apply?
Role Summary
The Associate Engineer at Caterpillar is a “Hybrid Systems Designer.” Unlike standard mechanical roles, you are responsible for how physical structures (like an exhaust pipe) interact with electrical brains (the control panel). In 2026, as the world moves toward “Intelligent Power,” this role is crucial for integrating sensors and smarter control systems into traditional power generation hardware.
Company Culture & Insights
Caterpillar is known for its “Yellow Blood” culture—a deep sense of pride and loyalty among employees. They value “Makers and Problem Solvers.” The environment in Bangalore is highly collaborative but technically rigorous. There is a strong emphasis on safety, sustainability, and “doing the work that shapes the world.”
Why We Recommend This Job
- The “Big Iron” Pedigree: Having Caterpillar on your resume is a gold standard in the heavy engineering and power sectors globally.
- Electromechanical Versatility: You won’t be siloed. Learning to design for both mechanical and electrical constraints makes you a much more versatile engineer in the long run.
- End-to-End Ownership: You get to see the parts you design actually being built and integrated into massive machines that power communities.
Career Growth Potential
- Design Engineer II: Taking ownership of larger sub-systems and complex integration projects.
- Senior Design Engineer: Leading technical roadmaps for a specific generator product line.
- Specialist / SME: Becoming a global Subject Matter Expert in areas like “Control Systems Hardware” or “Advanced Fuel Delivery.”
Skills You’ll Gain
| Category | Specific Competencies |
| Design Tools | Creo (Advanced surfacing/sheet metal), Teamcenter (PLM). |
| Manufacturing | DFM, DFA, Casting/Forging/Sheet Metal processes. |
| Analysis | Structural Analysis, Thermal expansion in exhaust systems, GD&T. |
| Electromechanical | Control Panel layout, Breaker selection, Wire routing basics. |
