1. Educational Qualifications & Experience
- Degree: Bachelor’s (B.E. / B.Tech) or Master’s (M.E. / M.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related structural discipline.
- Experience: 2 to 5 years of core product design and mechanical engineering experience (preferably in heavy machinery, off-highway vehicles, automotive, or aerospace industries).
2. Core Technical Competencies
- 3D CAD & Modeling: Strong proficiency in Creo (Pro/ENGINEER) for 3D part modeling, large assembly management, and surface modeling.
- Drawing Standards & GD&T: Advanced understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as per ASME Y14.5 standards, tolerance stack-up analysis, and 2D detail drawing creation.
- Engineering Fundamentals: Sound knowledge of strength of materials, kinematics, weldment design, casting/forging design rules, and sheet metal fabrication.
- PLM Systems: Experience with Product Lifecycle Management systems (e.g., PTC Windchill or Teamcenter) for change management and engineering releases.

Frequently Asked Interview Questions (With Answers & Solution Guidelines)
- GD&T Principles
- Question:“What is the difference between Position Tolerance and Concentricity in ASME Y14.5, and when would you use Maximum Material Condition (MMC)?”
- Answer Strategy: Explain that Position controls the location of a feature of size relative to datums, whereas Concentricity controls the median points of opposing elements. Highlight that applying the MMC modifier allows bonus tolerance as the feature departs from its maximum material condition, reducing manufacturing scrap without compromising functional fit.
- Tolerance Stack-Up Analysis
- Question:“How do you perform a 1D linear tolerance stack-up for a multi-component pin and clevis assembly?”
- Answer Strategy: Detail setting up a vector loop diagram: 1) Identify the critical gap parameter; 2) Assign direction vectors to each dimension; 3) Calculate worst-case maximum/minimum clearances; 4) Apply Statistical RSS (Root Sum Square) method if normal distribution assumptions hold true.
- Design for Casting & Forging
- Question:“What key design rules do you follow when designing a heavy cast-iron bracket in Creo?”
- Answer Strategy: Discuss adding draft angles (typically 1°–3°) for pattern extraction, applying generous fillet radii to eliminate stress concentrations and cooling hot spots, maintaining uniform wall thickness to prevent shrinkage porosity, and defining datum targets for machining setup.
