Job Description

Cisco is seeking an Embedded Software Developer to join its IIOT team in Bangalore. This role bridges the gap between hardware and software, requiring deep, “close-to-the-metal” programming. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and verifying control plane and data plane software, as well as low-level components like Board Support Packages (BSPs) and Linux device drivers for industrial networking equipment.

Requirements

  • Cisco is looking for early-to-mid career engineers with a strong foundation in computer science and electronics:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (with 1–3 years of experience) or Master’s degree (with 1–2 years of experience) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering (EE), or Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE).
  • Core Programming: Proficient in writing high-quality code in C and C++.
  • Systems Experience: Strong understanding of Operating Systems (Linux, Unix, RTOS), including hands-on experience with the Linux Kernel and device drivers.
  • Networking & Tools: * Experience developing firmware/software for networking equipment.
    • Familiarity with traffic generators and network analyzers (e.g., IXIA, Sniffer).
    • Preferred: Cisco Networking certificates (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE) are highly desirable.
  • Hardware Interfacing (Preferred): Experience developing and validating peripheral interfaces such as PCIe, I2C, SPI, UART, GPIO, and Ethernet.
  • Roles and Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Low-Level Development: Design and develop low-level software components including BSPs, kernel modules, and device drivers.
  • Networking Planes: Build and optimize control plane and data plane software for IIOT switches and routers.
  • Hardware Integration: Ensure seamless integration between physical hardware components and software layers.
  • Debugging & Triage: Triage, debug, and perform root-cause analysis on software bring-ups, hardware simulation issues, and customer field failures.
  • Testing & Documentation: Write detailed functional specifications, and perform rigorous unit testing and white-box testing.
  • Innovation: Actively contribute new ideas that can lead to patents and intellectual property for Cisco.

Role Summary

The Embedded Software Developer is a “Systems Architect.” You aren’t building web apps; you are writing the code that wakes up the hardware, manages memory, and dictates how packets are routed across industrial environments. This role is highly specialized, sitting at the exact intersection of electrical engineering and computer science.

Company Culture & Insights

The IIOT team operates as an agile “startup” within the larger Cisco ecosystem. The Bangalore campus is renowned for its comprehensive amenities (on-site gym, healthcare, cafés). Cisco places a massive emphasis on “empathy” and collaborative problem-solving, actively encouraging its engineers to experiment with AI tools for software development to stay ahead of the curve.

Why We Recommend This Job

  • The Hardware-Software Nexus: Moving from configuring virtual network topologies and router simulators to actually writing the kernel-level code that powers physical routing hardware is an incredibly rewarding technical leap. It grounds protocol knowledge in physical reality.
  • High Barrier to Entry: Deep expertise in C/C++, Linux kernels, and RTOS is much rarer than standard web development. This makes embedded developers highly sought after and provides excellent job security.
  • Scale of Impact: Your code will run on devices operating in harsh industrial environments (smart grids, automated factories), making physical infrastructure safer and more efficient.

Career Growth Potential

  • Embedded Software Engineer II / Senior: Taking ownership of specific routing modules or major hardware bring-ups.
  • Firmware / Systems Architect: Designing the overarching software architecture for next-generation IIoT hardware platforms.
  • Principal Engineer: Leading global technical strategy, driving patent creation, and representing Cisco on industry standards boards.

Skills You’ll Gain

Salary & Benefits Info

  • Estimated Salary Range: For an engineer with 1–3 years of experience in embedded systems at a premium product company like Cisco, the Total Compensation (TC) in Bangalore typically ranges from ₹15,00,000 to ₹25,00,000 per annum (inclusive of base salary, performance bonuses, and RSUs).
  • Benefits: Top-tier medical, provident fund matching, flexible hybrid working models, continuous learning funds, and extensive on-campus facilities.

Frequently Asked Interview Questions

  1. C/C++ Fundamentals: “Write a C function to manipulate a specific bit in a hardware register without altering the other bits. How do you prevent race conditions when doing this?”
  2. OS Internals: “Explain the boot sequence of a Linux system in an embedded device. When exactly does the bootloader hand off control to the kernel, and what role does the BSP play?”
  3. Networking & Routing: “If a physical switch interface starts dropping packets intermittently, how would you trace the issue from the physical layer (PHY) up through the driver and into the kernel’s network stack?”
  4. Protocols: “Compare the advantages of using SPI versus I2C for communicating with an onboard temperature sensor. Which is faster, and why?””

Behavioral & Culture Questions

  1. Root Cause Analysis: “Embedded debugging can be frustrating when you aren’t sure if the bug is in your software or the physical hardware. Tell me about a time you had to troubleshoot a highly ambiguous system failure.”
  2. Innovation: “Cisco values patent creation and IP. Describe a time you automated a process or designed a creative solution that significantly improved your team’s workflow.”
  3. Cross-Functional Collaboration: “How do you handle disagreements with the hardware engineering team when a new board isn’t behaving as expected during the initial ‘bring-up’ phase?”
